‘The Joy of a Toy’ with Arts Network

Arts Network held a workshop at the Horniman Museum to celebrate
World Mental Health Day 2014.

Our workshop invited members of the public to revisit happy memories of their youth by constructing Chatterboxes, Thaumatropes and peg People. Taking a trip down memory lane, recreating toys from the last century, with a modern twist!

We set up our den in the Hands on Base with Bunting!

Peg people - Traditional wooden dolly pegs used to create peg people. A modern spin on the traditional peg doll. Using crafty materials to create a character of your choice. We can't wait to meet who you make!

Chatterboxes - a form of origami used in children's games. Parts of the chatterbox are labelled with colours or numbers that serve as options for a player to choose from, and on the inside are eight flaps, each concealing a message, what will yours say?

Thaumatropes - a toy that was popular in the 19th century. A disk with a picture on each side is attached to two pieces of string. When the strings are twirled quickly between the fingers the two pictures appear to blend into one, as if by magic!

Many Thanks
